Wayne Rooney is a liability…oh yeah, and a dickhead

Wayne Rooney, the striker for Manchester United, is facing the prospect of a two-match suspension, as he has been charged by England’s Football Association on Monday for using foul language directed at a television camera while celebrating a goal in a Premier League match.

After scoring a penalty that completed his hat trick in United’s 4-2 victory over West Ham on Saturday, the England international yelled an expletive straight into the camera.

“The FA has today charged Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney for the use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language,” was stated by the governing body in an announcement.

Rooney, who is 25, has until Tuesday to address the charge. Should he accept it, he will automatically face a two-match ban.

In the event that he challenges the charge or the level of the punishment, a commission will review the case on Wednesday, potentially leading to a harsher penalty.

Directly after the match, the striker expressed remorse for the occurrence, stating that his reactions were “inappropriate.” Additionally, the host broadcaster, Sky Sports, extended an on-air apology to its audience.

Having been named last season’s player of the year in England, Rooney has faced a challenging season marked by a mix of personal issues, injuries, and a drop in form. Nevertheless, he has shown improvement in recent weeks, netting nine goals across all competitions since February began.

While I acknowledge Wayne’s passion and the intensity he brings, he ought to strive for greater professionalism. After all, he is a “professional” footballer…and earns a hefty salary to uphold that professionalism.

The hat-trick he scored on Saturday marked his first since January 2010.
