Steve Williams, the former caddie of Tiger Woods, has issued an apology following a racially insensitive remark directed at the golfer during an awards dinner.
After being dismissed by Woods over the summer, Williams acknowledged that his comments “could be construed as racist” and published an apology on his website after making the offensive comment at the HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.
When asked on stage to explain his reaction after Adam Scott’s victory at the Bridgestone Invitational in August, he answered, referring to Woods: “My aim was to shove it right up that black asshole.”
In his statement on the website, Williams expressed: “I apologise for comments I made last night.”
“Players and caddies anticipate this evening all year long, and the atmosphere is typically filled with joking and fun.”
“I now recognize how my comments could be interpreted as racist; nevertheless, I assure you that was not my intention.”
“I sincerely apologise to Tiger and anyone else I may have offended.”
Next week, Williams will have the opportunity to apologise in person as both Woods and Scott are set to participate in the Australian Open taking place in Sydney.
