The death of Monty Porter, the inaugural captain of the Cronulla Sharks, has left the team in mourning. He passed away last Monday morning at the age of 76.
Back in 1967, the Sharks made their debut in rugby league’s top division.
Porter played a pivotal role in St George’s premiership-winning teams from 1958 to 1960 and again from 1962 to 1964. In 1983, he was appointed as one of the original members of the New South Wales Rugby League Board of Directors, which comprised nine individuals.
He had been fighting Parkinson’s Disease for many years.
“Monty’s passing is a significant loss for rugby league, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this challenging time,” stated NRL CEO David Gallop.
Hailing from Tamworth in northern NSW, Porter began his career with Southern Division club Thirroul and Wests in 1955, going on to secure six grand final victories with St George during their remarkable 11-season dominance.
He also represented New South Wales.
