Socceroos youngster has testicular cancer

Following a diagnosis in June while on international duty, Dylan Tombides, an emerging Australian football talent, is currently undergoing treatment for testicular cancer.

The 17-year-old player is under contract with West Ham United in England, and both his club and Football Federation Australia have verified that the diagnosis took place during his participation in the FIFA under-17s World Cup in Mexico.

Upon learning of his condition, Tombides promptly returned to England where West Ham’s medical team facilitated further examinations by specialists.

He has already commenced his initial chemotherapy treatment at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, a conventional course of action for his diagnosis.

After beginning treatment, he returned home to recuperate and plans to continue with additional therapy in the weeks ahead.

“Dylan is receiving the highest standard of care. The medical professionals involved have assured him that he is expected to fully recover, both in terms of his health and his return to football,” stated Sean Howlett, the club doctor of West Ham.

“He is undergoing the typical treatment protocol for his condition, which includes a series of chemotherapy sessions.”

Ben Buckley, the FFA chief executive, conveyed a message of encouragement to Tombides’ family, while Craig Moore, who himself overcame testicular cancer two and a half years ago, has been a supportive figure for the young athlete in recent weeks.

“I spoke with Dylan shortly after his diagnosis, and my advice was to maintain an extremely positive outlook,” Moore remarked.

“The treatment success rates for this type of cancer are quite high, and I feel fortunate to have been declared cancer-free.

“It’s a challenging situation for a teenager to navigate, but Dylan has ample support from his family and friends, and I will be one among many who will stand by him during this period.

“I advised him to keep his spirits high and not to let the missed pre-season with West Ham get him down. He’s an exceptional player with a fantastic mindset, and he will overcome this hurdle.”

The West Ham United Academy Player of the Year is eager to reconnect with his teammates as soon as he can, including participating in the team’s annual photo shoot.
