Jose Mourinho thinks Real Madrid faces slim odds of defending their Spanish title after the 2-2 draw at home against struggling Espanyol.
A late goal scored by substitute Juan Albin enabled Espanyol to secure a point, leaving Barcelona 13 points ahead in La Liga after their 4-1 victory over second-placed Atletico Madrid, which featured another double from Lionel Messi.
“The league is now impossible,” Mourinho stated. “This is the first instance I’ve faced such a situation where my team is so far off their goals.
“However, I don’t want to dramatize it; I’ll view it as just another chapter in my life.
“It is almost impossible. There are too many points to recover at this point. Last season, we held a 10-point advantage in February, and La Liga was ours.
“Cristiano Ronaldo performed well, but his teammates did not. The mindset has been positive; what we need now is some calm and a bit of luck. Given the efforts of the players, we deserved to win, but we wasted several clear chances.”
