Hughes offers new deal to keep Schwarzer

Mark Hughes believes that a new contract could convince Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to remain at Craven Cottage for the long term.

Linked to a transfer to Arsenal during the summer, Hughes understands that once January arrives and the transfer window opens, the 38-year-old will be in demand again.

“I would ideally like to secure Mark with a longer contract,” commented Hughes.

“However, it may not be a possibility since he is entitled to explore his options come January.”

“My preference is for him to remain; I would feel more assured and believe I have a better chance of success with Mark on the field.”

“We aim for him to stay until the season’s conclusion. His short-term future lies here, which is reassuring, and we will address January as it approaches.”

“We are optimistic that we can convey our ambitions and the direction we wish to take. I’ve communicated to him my desire for him to be a part of that.”

Schwarzer received a warm welcome from Fulham supporters prior to the previous weekend’s 2-1 win against Wolves.

“Mark has truly made a significant impact here, and the reception he received reflected the respect he has earned,” Hughes noted.

“He has greatly influenced the club’s success, and the acknowledgment he received was well-deserved and meaningful for him.”

Hughes never had doubts about Schwarzer causing issues after his anticipated move to Emirates Stadium fell through.

“Mark is a remarkable professional. I was confident that there would be no shift in his daily efforts or his approach to matches, so I wasn’t worried,” he stated.

“Disappointments in football are more common than moments of joy, which is part of the game.”

“He has moved past the initial letdown, and now he is focusing on his performance.”
