Darren Lockyer is one of the greatest NRL players of all time

Darren Lockyer is set to leave rugby league with an astounding number of records, making it likely that he holds the record for the most records himself.

At the Test level, he has played the most matches, scored the highest number of tries, and led his country more frequently and to more victories than any other player in history.

If all goes according to plan, the lad from Roma, who always took on the Wally Lewis role in backyard matches with his siblings, will retire this season having participated in more NRL games than anyone before him.

The same applies to Origin, or it will if he competes in all three games this year.

He could claim the record at ANZ Stadium in Sydney next month, before heading back for an emotional farewell at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium on July 6.

Despite having numerous records on the horizon, Lockyer has emphasized that his final series should not focus on him.

However, the Queensland players genuinely wish to ensure he departs as a victor.

“We all know it’s Locky’s last series, but nobody has sat us down and said: ‘hey, we need to win this for Locky’,” explained hooker Cameron Smith, the likely successor to the Queensland and Australian captaincy.

“Locky will go out there and do his part, and he’d expect the other 16 players to do the same.

“He’s always demonstrated exceptional leadership on the field. Observing how he manages pressure situations has been beneficial for me.

“How many times has Locky made a crucial play in Origin to help us out of a tough spot?

“He’s the kind of leader who stands up when needed, doing so 99 times out of 100.

“That’s one of the most admirable traits a captain or leader can have—to be present and make a significant impact in a match.”

Smith expressed hope that the partnership between Jonathon Thurston and Lockyer would be cherished, given their accomplishments.

“They’ve secured five Origin series victories,” he noted.

“Wally (Lewis) and Alf (Allan Langer) are State of Origin legends. They achieved a lot for Queensland even against very strong NSW teams.

“I’m slightly biased because I play alongside these guys, but I believe they deserve recognition.

“I think they’ve won more Origins together than Wally and Alf did. Those legends were my heroes, but Darren and JT have created something truly special.”

Veteran forward Petero Civoniceva, who has played the most Origins with Lockyer, acknowledged the momentous nature of the event.

“It’s the end of an era watching such an extraordinary leader and exceptional player retire,” said Civoniceva, who has also played most of his record 45 Tests alongside Lockyer.

When asked if there might ever be another Darren Lockyer, Civoniceva replied, “that’s a challenging question.”

“I remember when Wally retired, there were many inquiries then.

“That’s what makes our game remarkable—there’s always incredible talent emerging.

“Who knows? It could take a long time, or it might happen in the next few years; I’m not certain.”
