According to Australia’s chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, the only circumstance under which he would step down from his role is if he is dismissed.
Having been a selector since 1996, Hilditch expressed his desire for an extension of his contract when it concludes in April.
The situation is quite absurd…regarding cricket, expectations tied to his role, and the essence of being Australian.
“My commitment to Australian cricket remains as fervent as ever; I continue to do this because my love for Australian cricket drives me,” he told reporters in Adelaide on Tuesday.
“The entire selection panel, including myself, strives to perform to the best of our abilities.
“Ultimately, it will be someone else’s decision to inform me when I am not needed.”
Since 2006, Hilditch has served as the chairman of the selection panel, and he also refuted claims that he failed to provide wicketkeeper Brad Haddin with reasons for his exclusion from the Twenty20 squad.
Haddin labeled the decision as “strange,” especially since Hilditch had previously considered him the top gloveman across all three formats of the game.
Furthermore, Peter Lovitt, the wicketkeeper’s manager, indicated that selectors had not consulted with Haddin regarding the decision to axe him.
“I had a conversation with Brad prior to his removal from the Twenty20 side and communicated the reasons to him,” Hilditch asserted.
Following the Ashes defeat to England, Hilditch stood by his selection panel’s performance, stating they had “done a very good job,” a remark that received skepticism from some.
“To any extent that people perceive we are not disappointed with the outcome, I find it disappointing that those statements were interpreted that way,” Hilditch noted.
“In reality, no one could be more disappointed than the national selection panel.
“We assembled what we believed to be a squad capable of reclaiming the Ashes, and it unfortunately fell short, which is disappointing.”
