With Japan striker Shinji Kagawa now out due to a foot injury, the Socceroos have gained a significant advantage as they approach the Asian Cup final.
After sustaining an injury to his right foot during Japan’s semi-final victory against South Korea, the Japan Football Association stated on Wednesday that he has “fractured his right fifth metatarsus,” leaving him sidelined indefinitely.
Although Kagawa is relatively new to coach Alberto Zaccheroni’s lineup at 21, he has been a consistent starter throughout the Asian Cup, scoring two goals in Japan’s 3-2 quarter-final win against the host nation, Qatar.
Playing for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, Kagawa has emerged as a standout player, netting eight goals in his first season.
On a positive note for Japan, defender Maya Yoshida is back in the mix after serving a suspension for a red card received in the quarter-final against Qatar, making him available for selection again for Tuesday’s semi-final against South Korea.
