Caroline Wozniacki claims she remains unaffected by the missed opportunity of facing Petra Kvitova for the No.1 ranking after her defeat to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the quarter-finals of the Sydney International.
The world No.8 fought hard, requiring three sets and over two hours to succumb to Wozniacki with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
If Kvitova, currently ranked No.2, wins the event, she will take Wozniacki’s place as the top player in the world.
Having been poised for a final clash with Kvitova, Wozniacki will need her Czech counterpart to lose in order to maintain her No.1 ranking before the Australian Open.
Despite this, the Dane, who reached the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and US Open last year, insists that the ranking is not a primary concern for her.
“Honestly, it doesn’t cross my mind,” Wozniacki remarked.
“The key thing is to stay healthy, to compete, and to perform at my best.”
“What will be, will be – it holds no significance.”
Wozniacki experienced a moment of worry in the final set when she required an injury time-out to address an issue with her left wrist. She plans to have it evaluated on Thursday, but she feels optimistic about her fitness ahead of the Australian Open.
“I hope it’s nothing serious,” she expressed.
“I felt it today, particularly in the third set, but I intend to get it checked out tomorrow and fingers crossed everything is fine.”
“I should be completely ready for the Australian Open.”
Radwanska is set to face world No.3 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in a Thursday semi-final, while Li Na of China will compete against Kvitova for a chance in the final.
