Benji Marshall has expressed confidence in 19-year-old prodigy James Tedesco securing the Wests Tigers’ vacant fullback spot.
In the Tigers’ 20-12 trial victory against Parramatta, Tedesco took the field in the No.1 jersey; however, Tim Sheens has not yet confirmed whether the young player will be the starting fullback for the NRL season opener.
Tom Humble, the former Parramatta utility, also had some time at fullback, and there are potential opportunities with ex-Eel Joel Reddy and Mitch Brown as options for the first match against Cronulla at Leichhardt.
When asked to choose a contender for the No.1 jersey, Marshall put his faith in the former Australian Schoolboys representative, calling him “a special talent.”
“There are several contenders, but that young kid who had the opportunity on the weekend, Tedesco; based on his training and what I’ve witnessed, he’s a special talent and I believe he has a bright future ahead,” Marshall commented.
With several openings in crucial positions, the Tigers’ depth might be put to the test this season; nonetheless, according to Marshall, there is much to appreciate about the talent emerging from the Toyota Cup ranks.
“We have a few stars on the rise,” Marshall noted.
“The talent within our under-20s is remarkable.
“It’s a beneficial situation to have, and I believe we could see some surprising newcomers in our team.”
