Arsenal are ‘just not good enough’, says Wenger

Manager Arsene Wenger described Arsenal as “terrible” and “just not good enough” following the Gunners’ painful defeat to Blackburn Rovers on the road.

At halftime, Wenger’s side appeared dominant, holding a 2-1 lead and creating numerous opportunities, but they eventually collapsed, resulting in a 4-3 loss, which included own-goals from Alex Song and Laurent Koscielny.

For supporters of Arsenal, the outcome rekindled painful recollections of their recent 8-2 loss against Manchester United.

With only four points from five league matches this season, the Gunners are experiencing their worst start since Wenger’s arrival at the club in 1996.

Additionally, they have surrendered 14 goals, the most of any team in the top division.

Wenger reacted: “It is terrible, it is just not good enough,” referring to Arsenal’s precarious position.

He added, “We are certainly very frustrated. The team’s spirit is quite willing, but looking at the number of goals we’ve conceded, it simply isn’t acceptable. You cannot come here and give up four goals like we did today. I have belief that the group will improve. However, it’s crucial for us to achieve quick results.”

This defeat is expected to intensify speculation regarding Wenger’s future at the club, yet he declined to engage in such conversations.

“Speculation is part of modern life,” he remarked.

“What can I do about that?”

“My focus lies in performing well, which means giving my all for the club. I have no control over speculations.”

Arsenal showcased impressive football in the first half, with Gervinho and Mikel Arteta each netting their initial goals for the team around a neat finish from Yakubu.

However, the second half told a starkly different tale.

Yakubu scored again from a close distance after the own-goals, bringing Blackburn to a 4-2 lead with only two shots on goal. Wenger acknowledged his defense’s shortcomings as a significant concern.

“You cannot disregard worry when witnessing the performance we delivered today,” he stated.

“It simply isn’t defensively robust enough when in front 2-1 against Blackburn, knowing that if you defend solidly, you’ll score goals. It’s not all negative today, which is indeed frustrating. Presently, we lack the ability to concentrate defensively to secure such victories. It’s crucial to avoid giving away easy goals like that. While we created numerous chances, even in the second half, we struggled with maintaining focus on their strengths, such as corners and free-kicks.”

“Ultimately, we lost a match in which we scored six goals, and that is quite disappointing.”
