2012 Australian Open will be record breaker

Organisers of the Melbourne event announced today that next year’s Australian Open will set a record as the richest grand slam tournament ever, with both the men’s and women’s champions each earning A$2.3 million.

Additionally, the total prize purse for the tournament, scheduled from January 16-29, has been increased to A$26 million, according to a statement on their website (www.australianopen.com).

A new women’s legends event was also unveiled, featuring three-time Australian Open champion Martina Hingis, and the extension of hawk-eye technology to the Margaret Court Arena was confirmed.

Victoria premier Ted Baillieu commented in the statement, “The Australian Open inspires players at an elite and grassroots level, particularly following the impressive victory of local hero Sam Stosur, who won the 2011 U.S. Open singles title last month.”
