US marines aid Japan

US marines arrived in Japan recently to provide emergency help if the crisis at the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant worsens.

The specially trained squad, wearing gas masks and grey radiation suits, took part in drills with Japanese counterparts. Master Sgt Mark Dumdie said, “We’re here to be a quick reaction force if something really bad does happen.”

Japan announced it had delayed plans to stop pumping radioactive water into the sea from the plant. Neighbours, including China, complained they were not being kept informed about the crisis.
