Tub of lard in cupboard is ‘fit for consumption’

A German pensioner, who had stored a tub of lard in his cupboard for 64 years, presented it to authorities who declared it quite suitable for consumption – albeit somewhat bland.

Hans Feldmeier, an 87-year-old retired chemist, recounted that he received the pig fat as a student in 1948 near Rostock, as part of the post-war American aid initiative.

He recalled being given the tub along with two cans of noodles and a bottle of milk.

“I simply didn’t want to dispose of it,” he stated.

After 64 long years, he finally brought it to the food safety agents and was surprised by their evaluation.

“There is, of course, a slight deficiency in both smell and taste,” noted Frerk Feldhusen from the office of agriculture, food safety, and fisheries in the eastern region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Additionally, the lard exhibited “a gritty texture, was challenging to dissolve, and appeared somewhat aged,” the officials remarked.

Nevertheless, “overall, considering its freshness level and its material composition, the product is deemed satisfactory,” Feldhusen conveyed, emphasizing that it meets today’s standards for being suitable for the dinner table.
