A bungling burglar was left disappointed after allegedly mistaking his neighbour’s cremated mother’s ashes for a bag of cocaine.
William ‘Billy’ Cantrell thought his luck was in after coming across the box of ashes after breaking into his neighbour’s home in East Nashville, according to police.
The 28-year-old is alleged to have taken the small box and an Xbox before returning to his grandmother’s house with the goods.
‘William thought it was drugs, he thought he’d done found him a box of cocaine,’ explained his grandmother Wanda Allen.
Ms Allen said her grandson was not sober enough to remember the incident but does not believe he opened the box.
‘If he gets to drinking and doing drugs he’s out there. He needs help. There needs to be more to it than putting him in jail,’ she said.
‘On the top of the box, it had a white piece of paper taped over it with date of birth, date of death, name and the funeral home.’
Mr Cantrell was later arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.
‘They just made it sound like he’s a bad, terrible person broke in this house and stole this woman’s ashes,’ his mother Kathy added.
‘I’m not saying he’s not guilty but he didn’t know what he was stealing.’
