After allegedly mistaking his neighbour’s cremated mother’s ashes for cocaine, a bungling burglar was left feeling disappointed.
According to police, William ‘Billy’ Cantrell stumbled upon the box of ashes while breaking into his neighbour’s East Nashville home.
The 28-year-old reportedly took the small box along with an Xbox and returned to his grandmother’s residence with the items.
“William thought he found himself a box of drugs, believing it to be cocaine,” his grandmother, Wanda Allen, explained.
Ms. Allen mentioned that her grandson was not in a sober state to recall the incident but is confident he did not open the box.
“If he’s drinking and using drugs, he’s out there. He needs help. There ought to be more than just sending him to jail,” she stated.
“A white piece of paper was taped on top of the box, displaying the date of birth, date of death, name, and the funeral home,” she added.
Mr. Cantrell was subsequently arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.
“They made it sound like he’s a terrible person who broke into this house and stole this woman’s ashes,” his mother, Kathy, commented.
“I’m not saying he’s innocent, but he had no idea what he was taking.”
