Yesterday, hundreds gathered near Ground Zero in New York to protest the proposed construction of a mosque and community center in the area.
The crowd, waving banners, was contained behind barricades just steps away from the site of the al-Qaeda attacks that resulted in the deaths of 2,995 people in 2001.
One of the signs displayed the message: “Not all Muslims are terrorists but all the terrorists were Muslim.”
In contrast, several hundred supporters of the mosque chanted: “Muslims are welcome here. We say no to racist fear.”
There were no arrests made.
