In an effort to attract more fans during challenging economic times, a Russian women’s football team has adopted an unusual strategy – they will play their next match in bikinis.
This move represents a notable regression for women’s football as it seeks parity with the men’s game. FC Rossiyanka, based in Krasnoarmeysk near Moscow, has made this commitment after experiencing a decline in gate receipts this season.
However, the club showcases itself as a serious contender despite initial perceptions.
Established in 1990, FC Rossiyanka boasts three Russian Women’s Premier League titles, clinched in 2005, 2006, and 2010. Additionally, they have qualified twice for the newly created Women’s Champions League, reaching the last-16 on both occasions.
Coach Tatyana Egorova stated that, despite their achievements, they remain underappreciated and expressed hope that this publicity stunt would improve their financial situation.
‘We are the top women’s team in Russia and have celebrated numerous championships, even representing our nation in the UEFA Champions League,’ Egorova articulated.
‘However, very few are aware of us, and attendance at games has been low, prompting our decision to enhance our visibility by donning bikinis.
‘We are optimistic that this will also increase ticket sales.
‘We believe it’s a solid concept – our athletes are stunning, exceptional players, and are committed to achieving victory.’
Unsurprisingly, the promotional photoshoot for the event is already garnering considerable attention from mainstream media outlets in Russia.
Well… that was unexpected.
