Jamie Oliver finds a fortune and some classics

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has apparently found rare Joy Division and New Order master tapes when digging up the basement of a new restaurant in Manchester, England.

The new restaurant, which is being built in a former branch of Midland bank, was being excavated when the tapes were found, alongside guns, gold and jewellery. The total value of the haul is $1.7 million. Oliver has since given everything found in the basement to the treasury.

Hundreds of safety deposit boxes were also discovered, dating back to 1935 were found at an old bank that the celebrity chef converted into a restaurant.

Their owners could not be traced, so Bank of England officials used a drill to break open the boxes.

A team of designers and architects began working on the restaurant, called Jamie’s Italian, in March 2011.

“It’s going to be one of the jewels in the Jamie’s Italian collection,” the celebrity chef quipped.
