For many individuals, winning the lottery would symbolize a shift in their way of life – however, one homeless man is determined not to let his newfound fortune change him.
Dennis Mahurin has gained a degree of notoriety in his local area of Bloomington, Indiana, USA, after striking it rich with $50,000 from a scratch-off ticket.
Having been homeless for nearly 35 years and currently residing in a tent, Mr. Mahurin bought the winning ticket at a gas station, unaware of the substantial amount he had won.
“I scratched it off right here in my tent,” he recalled.
“I assumed it was a thousand dollars. She told me, ‘Nope.’ I responded, ‘Oh, did I mess up?’ She then clarified it was fifty thousand, and I nearly collapsed.”
Despite his good fortune, Mr. Mahurin remains content in his tent and plans to share his windfall with friends.
“Given all the other homeless individuals in the area, I’ve decided,” he remarked.
“I’m going to give each of them $100.”
He also intends to reconnect with his son, undergo some dental procedures, and save a portion of his winnings, stating, “I’m living in a tent, happy as can be in my nature.”
