Gay penguins split as Buddy goes straight

One half of Toronto’s famous gay penguin couple has spurned his beau in favour of a female mate.

Zoo keepers announced that the pair had officially split after Buddy, 21, got together with a female penguin, although Pedro, aged ten, is yet to move on.

The duo nested together for around one year, and videos of the animals went viral – although experts claimed it was more of a ‘bromance’ than a sexual pairing.

Due to the status of penguins as an endangered species, the pals were sadly separated in order to enjoy some penguin passion with female birds.

Just three days later Buddy appeared to have forgotten all about Pedro, as he scored with a female penguin.

Buddy previously had a female partner for over a decade, producing chicks, while Pedro is yet to father any offspring.

Despite Pedro’s best efforts to get lucky with girl penguin Thandiwey, which have lasted for several weeks, she has so far spurned the advances of the try-hard bird.

Experts have said that it is likely the formerly ‘gay’ penguins will eventually settle with females.

When the lovebirds hit headlines earlier this year, comedian Jimmy Kimmel dubbed the duo the ‘Brokeback Iceberg’ penguins, and joked that they had been seen at a Lady Gaga gig.
