While fishing in an eastern Indonesian river, a man was devoured by a crocodile, leaving only his head floating in the water, which was later found by his grieving family.
Sam Sem Ledo, a father of 11, had gone out to fish for crabs in the Amabi river located in Kupang district on Timor island.
However, when he did not return home the next day, several family members, along with police, initiated a search for him.
Initially, they discovered a basket filled with crabs, his fishing equipment, and flip-flops, but they soon encountered his head floating in an estuary, according to local detective Bonifasius Rumbewas.
“We were able to identify him because of the head,” local police chief Mochammad Slamet stated, adding that additional body parts, such as intestines, were also found in the water.
The police did not disclose which family members were part of the search effort.
Slamet mentioned that a saltwater crocodile was responsible for Ledo’s death, noting that the area was known to be infested with them.
Over the past year and a half, at least five individuals have been killed by crocodiles in the district, Slamet reported.
He advised residents “to be aware that they live near a crocodile habitat and to exercise extra caution.”
The extensive Indonesian archipelago is known for its diverse and exotic wildlife, which includes multiple species of crocodile.
