After a Justin Bieber concert, robbers armed with ropes, hammers, and chisels managed to break into a strong-room at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium, making off with 3 million rand ($330,000) in cash, according to local media and police reports on Monday.
An officer from the Booysens police station, located in the extensive Soweto township, indicated that stadium officials, who hosted the final match of the 2010 soccer World Cup, only discovered the cash was missing on Monday morning.
The stolen amount consisted of earnings from both Sunday night’s concert featuring Bieber and a performance by U.S. rock band Bon Jovi the night before.
“A police officer who wished to remain anonymous stated, ‘The money was taken from the building and they only realized today.’ He added, ‘We do not know how many individuals were involved as we are still in the process of gathering evidence.'”
