Yesterday, the U.S. technology company reported that Apple Inc is looking into an incident where a Chinese woman lost her life due to an electric shock while she was answering a call on her charging iPhone 5.
According to police, last Thursday, a 23-year-old flight attendant named Ma Ailun from the western Xinjiang region of China was electrocuted when she answered a call on her mobile phone while it was still plugged in.
“We express our deep sorrow regarding this tragic event and extend our condolences to the Ma family. We will conduct a thorough investigation and work closely with authorities on this issue,” Apple stated in an email.
Apple did not provide comments on specifics, including whether this incident is an isolated one.
Ma’s sister took to Sina’s microblog to mention that Ma fell unconscious and passed away after using her iPhone 5 while charging, urging users to exercise caution—a message that quickly gained traction on the platform.
In April, after facing more than two weeks of backlash from state-run media regarding its after-sales service, Apple issued an apology to Chinese customers and modified its iPhone warranty policies in its second-largest market.
