In a bizarre medical incident, a 14-year-old boy from India reportedly had a 2cm long fish enter his penis.
The boy was admitted to the hospital after experiencing pain, dribbling urine, and acute urinary retention for a day. He stated that while cleaning his aquarium at home, the fish inadvertently slipped into his penis.
According to Professors Vezhaventhan and Jeyaraman, who provided treatment and later documented the case, “While he was cleaning the fish tank in his house, he was holding a fish in his hand and went to the toilet for passing urine. When he was passing urine, the fish slipped from his hand and entered his urethra and then he developed all these symptoms.”
Upon discovering the fish in the boy’s bladder, Vezhaventhan and Jeyaraman employed a method called cystourethroscopy, introducing a specialized set of forceps through the patient’s penis. Unfortunately, the fish proved too slippery for a proper grip, prompting them to utilize a rigid ureteroscope fitted with a tool typically used for extracting bladder stones.
The fish, which Practical Fishkeeping suspects to be a small Betta species, was removed and measured 2cm in length and 1.5cm in width.
Subsequently, the boy was admitted for counseling to address any potential trauma.
