According to reports, Wayne Rooney’s father, a star at Manchester United, was one of nine individuals arrested by detectives looking into alleged betting irregularities connected to a Scottish Premier League match last year.
Police apprehended Wayne Rooney senior, aged 48, at his residence in Liverpool.
Additionally, Richie Rooney, the uncle of the England soccer star, was also taken into custody by officers from Merseyside following “extensive inquiries” concerning the game between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14, 2010.
Stewart Regan, chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, confirmed earlier that Steve Jennings, a midfielder for Motherwell, had been arrested in connection with the investigation.
The 26-year-old Jennings received a red card for dissent late in the match at Fir Park, which ended with Hearts winning 2-1. An inquiry was initiated after bookmakers noticed unusual betting activities.
Born in Liverpool, north-western England, Jennings was arrested at his home in Glasgow. The other eight men, including Rooney’s father and uncle, were arrested across Merseyside, where they are from.
Jennings maintains he was not involved.
