In Brisbane’s CBD, hairdressers have embraced a daring approach, with customers arriving from as far away as Townsville for a fresh cut.
Operating out of The Grosvenor on George, Barber Babes features a topless female barber who trims hair while clad only in hot pants or underwear.
Beyond haircuts, the barbers in minimal attire provide services such as scalp massages, brow waxing, blow-drying, and shaves using a cut-throat razor.
Jasmine Robson, owner and operator, stated that all stylists are fully qualified.
“One of our stunning barbers was even recognized as apprentice of the year during her training,” she explained.
“Although some barbers offer lap dances, it’s not during the Barber Babes service. They take their craft seriously and don’t view it lightly.”
Robson noted that most men typically find haircuts unappealing, so the goal was to enhance that experience.
“We discovered many exotic dancers are also trained hairdressers but often leave their passion behind due to low wages,” she remarked.
Since the launch of Barber Babes in February, Robson has observed great enthusiasm from the clientele, with some men visiting every few days for a shave.
The customer base is quite diverse, including fly-in fly-out miners, local businessmen, musicians, barristers, women, and university professors.
“We have one regular customer who specifically flies in from Townsville just for a haircut,” said Robson.
“While we’ve received a few bewildered looks and questions, we definitely haven’t had any complaints.”
However, Melinda Liszewski from Collective Shout, an organization that addresses the objectification of women, expressed that she wasn’t shocked by the service’s popularity.
“This illustrates the blending of the sex industry into more conventional spaces,” she noted.
“It’s perpetuating the notion that women exist solely for men’s sexual arousal and titillation.”
