In Italy, the MPs have not reached a consensus on a candidate for the next president; some even submitted humorous votes for porn star Rocco Siffredi and actress Sophia Loren.
Parliament Speaker Laura Boldrini emphasized, without any hint of irony, that Siffredi “lacks the necessary qualifications,” according to Italian media reports.
At the age of 48, the actor falls short of the minimum age requirement of 50 to assume the presidency.
Voting also included Silvio Berlusconi’s spouse Veronica Lario, as well as voluptuous actress Valeria Marini, who shares a name with serious presidential contender Franco Marini.
“I’m flattered!” Valeria Marini remarked, noting: “I understand it was meant ironically, but it still makes me happy.”
However, she declined the honor, expressing: “It’s crucial that the right decision is made. The president is a vital cornerstone.”
As names were announced, laughter and applause echoed throughout parliament, even amid the seriousness of the ongoing two-month political crisis.
One jokester even voted for a fictional character, Raffaello Mascetti – a struggling aristocrat portrayed by the late, beloved comedian Ugo Tognazzi.
In a nation passionate about soccer, it was inevitable that a nod to the sport emerged – a vote for former Italy national coach Giovanni Trapattoni.
