Students fight on race track, while still racing

During a relay race in New York City, two high school athletes literally embodied the phrase ‘fight to the finish’ by igniting a mass brawl.

Competing in the Hispanic Games last weekend, the athletes hailed from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn as well as Mount Vernon High School located in suburban Westchester County.

As they approached the home straight to hand off their batons, the two unnamed competitors became entangled and veered off the track.

In a matter of seconds, punches started to fly and the rest of their teams quickly joined the fray.

This altercation occurred during a heat of the relay race at the Hispanic Games, one of the nation’s largest track meets.

With around 6,000 high school athletes from 300 different schools in attendance, the event took place at the Armory Track in Harlem.

Rather than focusing on the brawl, the cameraman quickly zoomed in on a new leader in the race.

Meanwhile, the announcer remained silent regarding the commotion on the track and merely announced the new race leader.

Despite the chaos, a relay team from Thomas Jefferson High School managed to reach the finals, placing 26th out of 52.
