Twitter was utilized by The Perth Mint of Australia to announce the release of a 1 tonne Gold Kangaroo coin.
Weighing 1 tonne, which is the equivalent of 1,000 kilograms or 32,150.7466 troy ounces.
At current market rates, the gold content of the coin alone values it at over US $55 million.
The tweet included both the announcement of the 1 tonne gold coin and an image, referring to it as “the world’s largest gold coin.”
Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait by Ian Rank Broadley is featured on the front of the coin, which also bears a face value of AUD $1,000,000.
Dr. Stuart Devlin AO CMG, who served as goldsmith and jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II, designed the classic kangaroo representation on the reverse.
Inscribed details include the year “2012” and “1 Tonne 9999 Gold.”
Prior contenders for the title of the world’s largest gold coin were a 31 kilogram Gold Philharmonic coin produced by the Austrian Mint in 2004.
This was succeeded by a 100 kilogram Gold Maple coin created by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007.
