A motocross rider, aged 19, has lost his life while training for a 90m jump.
While training at Maitland Showground, Tyrone Gilks collided at full speed with the front of a landing ramp.
He sustained severe chest injuries and unfortunately died during surgery at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
Gilks had been preparing to set a world record jump at the Maitland Bike and Hot Rod Show, scheduled for Saturday night in Maitland.
On his Facebook page, he mentioned on Monday: “I’m attempting to break the current World’s Longest ramp to dirt jump on a 250cc two stroke of 310ft.”
A television crew documented the accident, which will assist police in their investigation.
Reports indicate that Gilks mentioned he was ‘going for it’ in fifth gear just moments before the accident occurred.
