Authorities in South Africa are looking into the death of former Somerset captain and cricket writer Peter Roebuck, with expectations that an inquest will take at least six weeks to establish an official cause.
Roebuck, aged 55, was in Cape Town to report on the Test series featuring the Proteas and Australia, and it is reported that he jumped from a window of his Southern Sun Hotel room.
A representative from the South African Police Service reiterated that there are no indications of foul play, but emphasized that a thorough investigation is required prior to providing a formal cause of death.
“Currently, I can only confirm that we are conducting an inquest into Mr. Roebuck’s death,” stated the spokesman.
“The focus of this inquiry is to officially ascertain the circumstances surrounding his passing, including the cause of death. Additionally, I can confirm that no evidence has emerged at the scene to imply foul play related to his demise.
“I do not anticipate any notable developments until the post-mortem report is completed, which I expect to take at least six weeks.”
