At just 2 years old, George, a Basset Hound from West Yorkshire, UK, found himself in a perilous situation when he was strangled by a phone cord…but he astonishingly managed to save his own life by dialing 999, which is the British equivalent of 000.
In a turn of events, George accidentally knocked over a heavy-duty, traditional phone in the home of his owner, Steve Brown. Tangled in the cord, he became ensnared with it wrapped around his neck. In a remarkable feat of determination, George…while in the midst of choking…was able to use his paw to call 999.
An emergency operator on the line detected heavy breathing and gasping sounds, prompting them to notify the authorities. The rescue team was assisted by a neighbor, Paul Walker, who had a key to the house.
Upon entering, Walker witnessed the dog in distress and quickly tore the cord away from the phone to free him.
He mentioned to Pommie newspapers: “It’s incredible that you could see the imprint of his paw on the phone used to dial 999…he essentially saved his own life.”
Lydia Brown, the daughter of George’s owner, also expressed her astonishment at the Basset’s heroic action, stating, “He’s quite dopey and mainly enjoys chewing socks.”
Now, however, George doesn’t seem quite so dopey anymore.
