During a tragic start to the unofficial Melbourne Cup weekend, four individuals have lost their lives on Victoria’s roads.
In separate incidents in the south-west of Victoria, two motorcyclists were fatally injured. Just after 9:00pm on Friday, a 54-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a car on Walsh Road in Warrnambool, according to police reports.
Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man was killed while riding a trail-bike with a passenger on Whitehead Court in Warrnambool shortly after 3:00am on Saturday. The passenger was subsequently taken to the hospital due to a suspected broken leg.
Additionally, a male suffered fatal injuries when a utility vehicle carrying seven people rolled over at around 2:00am near Dargo.
A spokesperson for rural ambulance services reported that one individual is anticipated to be flown to Melbourne for treatment of potential spinal injuries. The other five occupants sustained various injuries including cuts, abrasions, and damage to their chest, ribs, and wrists.
In another incident, a 19-year-old man has died when the vehicle he was operating went off the road in Derrinallum, near Lismore, around 3:00am. His 21-year-old brother, who was a passenger, has been airlifted to the hospital with possible head and spinal injuries.
These incidents bring the total road toll to 257, an increase from 232 at the same time last year.
