UB40 band members declared bankrupt

The declaration of bankruptcy has been made for four original members of the reggae band UB40.

Last week, a judge at a UK County Court ruled against saxophonist Brian Travers, drummer Jimmy Brown, trumpeter Terence Oswald, and percussionist Norman Hassan.

This decision follows the collapse of the band’s former record label, DEP International, as well as a financial dispute that caused the split in the group back in 2008.

Over their 33-year career, UB40 achieved sales of over 70 million records.

They secured more than 50 chart hits, including popular songs like Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe, and Kingston Town.

The court order is effective for one year, allowing tax authorities to confiscate property to address any unpaid debts.

The Insolvency Service has now recorded the details of the four musicians.

A representative for ex-frontman Ali Campbell stated to the media that the bankruptcy case validates his decision to leave the band.

“It is ironic that they are declaring bankruptcy the very week they celebrate their first gig, after having entered administration in 2006, proving Ali and Mickey Virtue right in their choice to part ways with UB40,” she remarked.

Campbell left the band in a contentious split in 2008, citing “management difficulties.”

In an open letter posted on the band’s website for fans, he expressed being “profoundly unhappy with administrative practices” and mentioned “an ongoing investigation into the management of my business affairs in connection with UB40.”

Robin Campbell, the brother of Ali and a fifth original member, was also part of the Birmingham County Court case; however, he is not listed as bankrupt.

This decision arrives just one week after UB40 received a music heritage plaque at the Hare and Hounds pub in Kings Heath, Birmingham, England, marking the venue of their first performance in 1979.
