The Smiths love Slow Moving Millie cover

Slow Moving Millie has revealed that members of The Smiths have been very positive about her cover of ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’, which is the soundtrack to a TV ad campaign this Christmas.

The singer – real name Amelia Warner – revealed that Morrissey has said her version is “delightful”, while guitarist Johnny Marr “thinks it’s great”.

However, Warner admitted that she has received a backlash from fans of the indie legends online. She said: “I’ve had a few people being furious at me on Twitter, saying, ‘How dare you?’ But I haven’t done anything to the original. I think you’ll find it still exists.”

Johnny Marr took to Twitter to respond to fans who had expressed surprise and disappointment that a cover of song had featured in the department store’s recent Christmas advertisements by claiming that its legacy had not been “sullied”.

He said: “Writing ‘Please Please…’ one Friday in 1984 is one of the best memories of my life. This ad has not sullied that memory one bit.”
