Corey Taylor from Slipknot has publicly criticized producer Rick Rubin, labeling him as “overrated” and “overpaid”.
The band’s frontman, who collaborated with Rubin on the 2004 album ‘Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses’, expressed to an audience during a Q & A event in Texas that the producer resembles a “thin shadow” of his earlier self.
“There are individuals who would love for me to conform, essentially saying, ‘Working with Rick Rubin was a fantastic experience,'” he remarked. “But let me share the brutal truth: Rick Rubin only showed up for 45 minutes each week. During that time, he would lie on a couch and have a microphone brought near his face, so he wouldn’t have to get up.”
Taylor further stated, “The Rick Rubin of today is merely a faint echo of who he used to be. He is overrated, overpaid, and I will never collaborate with him again for as long as I live.”
Other musicians have also criticized Rubin publicly. In 2010, Muse’s Matt Bellamy humorously thanked Rubin for “showing us how not to produce” at the Music Producers Guild Awards.
Earlier this month, Taylor announced that Slipknot’s upcoming album would draw inspiration exclusively from their late bassist Paul Gray, who passed away last June from a suspected overdose.
Additionally, the band has released a 10th anniversary edition of their 2001 album ‘Iowa’. Sid Wilson, the band’s DJ, described the recording sessions for this LP as “brutal” and “really dark”.
