Bowie, Stones and the Pistols turned down Olympics

Reports indicate that David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, and Kate Bush all declined the opportunity to participate in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The aforementioned artists were invited by the ceremony’s producer, Kim Gavin, but chose not to take part.

Additionally, it has been noted that The Who rejected Gavin’s invitation twice before eventually agreeing to perform at the event in Stratford, East London.

The three-hour show, which included performances by The Spice Girls, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs, Liam Gallagher, Jessie J, Queen, Annie Lennox, George Michael, and Take That, received a mix of reviews. The Guardian also mentions that some members of The Spice Girls were hesitant about their participation.

Carl Barat disclosed that The Libertines also passed on the opportunity to perform at the Olympics closing ceremony. While the ceremony was in progress, he shared on Twitter that he and his former bandmates had been approached but “couldn’t do it.”

Though Kate Bush could not be persuaded to join, she acknowledged the organizers of the closing ceremony after a remix of her song ‘Running Up That Hill’ was featured in the finale of London 2012.
