World’s largest rodent is family pet

In America, a couple has decided to adopt a giant rodent and even permits it to share their bed.

The Texas couple with Gary

Melanie Typaldos, aged 57, lives in Texas with her pet Gary, recognized as the world’s largest rodent.

Her husband Richard Loveman, 54, along with Melanie, has allowed their giant guinea pig, which is known as a capybara, to sleep with them.

The couple first fell in love with these South American critters while vacationing in Venezuela, ultimately deciding to adopt Gary from a previous owner who could no longer care for him.

Gary has been embraced as a family member and delights in swimming with his owners in a pool that mirrors his natural habitat.

Melanie mentions, “Some might think it’s odd, but having him is really not different from owning a dog or a cat.

“Gary is incredibly smart and quite affectionate.”

The lovable eight-stone creature keeps the family entertained with various tricks.

Melanie explains, “He picks up tricks rapidly—quicker than the average dog.”

“He is capable of shaking, spinning in circles, standing on his hind legs, and jumping on command.”

Living happily among the family’s diverse array of animals—such as a horse, rabbits, tortoises, dogs, and a cat—Gary has carved out his place.

Though, Melanie admits, “Occasionally he becomes upset with the tortoises, believing they encroach on his territory and there’s nothing he can do about it.”

Melanie also brings Gary, who thrives on a grass diet, to local schools to teach children about the natural world.

She notes, “Many people aren’t aware of what a capybara is, but as soon as they see him, they are eager to pet him and offer him treats.”

“He thrives on that attention.”
