This day marks the year 1968, the Australian town of Meckering experienced an earthquake. At 10:59am on the 14th of October 1968, an earthquake, measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale, impacted the town which had a population of around 240 residents. Although there were no fatalities, 17 people sustained injuries, and the earthquake inflicted approximately $2.2 million in damages, which is about $5 million in today’s terms. The ground ruptured over a distance of 40km, with widths reaching up to 1.5m and heights of 2.4m, and the scar that remains is visible in the landscape to this day.
