How to prevent and treat the effects of wearing a mask everyday

Wearing a mask continuously can take a toll on our skin, and the consequences of daily use might result in various skin issues. Even individuals who have once possessed flawless skin may find themselves adversely affected by daily mask usage, encountering problems like clogged pores, acne, excessive dryness or peeling skin, as well as redness and rashes. Maintain simplicity

Regularly cleanse your skin

It’s advisable to wash your face consistently, at least twice a day – before masking and especially AFTER wearing a mask. Opt for a gentle cleanser that’s free from fragrance and parabens, and avoid excessively hot water, as it can lead to dehydration of the skin.

Hydrate and calm

To soothe red and irritated skin overnight, applying substances like petroleum jelly, paw paw ointment, nappy rash cream, aloe vera, or products enriched with hyaluronic acid can help facilitate skin healing. These can also be applied behind the ears if you experience irritation from the loops of your mask. Additionally, applying petroleum jelly to raw skin areas before wearing your mask can help protect the skin barrier while assisting in recovery.

Forego makeup

For those who find it difficult to go completely makeup-free, minimization is key – stick to a bare minimum and choose a mineral makeup that’s less likely to clog pores. Makeup may worsen mask-related skin concerns, so if possible, consider skipping it altogether.

Another alternative is to only apply makeup to the upper half of your face and leave the skin hidden by the mask free of products. This approach simplifies the washing process for your mask, as you won’t have to deal with all the makeup stains!

Daily mask washing

While disposable masks are hygienic, they pose challenges in terms of cost and environmental impact. A breathable cotton cloth mask addresses both concerns; however, it’s essential to have several in rotation and to wash them diligently at the end of each day to reduce germ transmission.

Oil, dirt, and makeup can build up on your mask, making it critical to wear a clean mask daily. As you breathe in and out while wearing your mask, particles will accumulate and may further irritate your skin. It’s vital to eliminate any build-up of dirt.To effectively eliminate germs and bacteria, wash your cloth mask by hand or in a washing machine.

It’s advisable to use hot water along with a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent.

Sore behind ears

One of the most prevalent issues arises from masks looping behind the ears. Consider alternating masks daily or choose a mask that secures behind your head. Alternatively, a face shield could be used. If it’s essential to wear the same mask daily (e.g., for work), a headband with buttons on the side can be a solution, allowing you to attach the loops around the buttons instead of your ears.

While you can often resolve these issues on your own with proper care, consulting a professional may be necessary if you can’t manage a mask-related condition effectively. A dermal skin therapist or dermatologist can offer more effective treatments for your symptoms.

Depending on how severe your skin condition is, they might suggest a series of treatments. Both IPL machines and LED light therapy with blue light are excellent for treating active acne and preventing future breakouts. These methods are suitable for all skin types, utilizing specific wavelengths of light to eliminate acne-causing bacteria deep within the skin.
