Tobey Maguire refuses luxury car with leather seats

Actor Tobey Maguire, dissatisfied with the complimentary new Mercedes provided for his personal use during his time in Australia, returned the luxury car due to concerns over the leather used in its plush upholstery.

In 2002, Maguire was recognized as the world’s sexiest vegetarian by PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He seems to have adopted a “no-leather” policy in his personal life and expressed discontent with being given a vehicle adorned in ultra-soft animal skin while staying in Sydney.

As a result, Bazmark Films, producers of The Great Gatsby featuring Maguire as Nick Carraway, retrieved the car and arranged for the upholstery to be replaced with vinyl at the dealership.

Maguire lives with his family—wife Jennifer Meyer-Maguire and their children, Ruby Sweetheart, 4, and Otis Tobias, 2—in an inner-city terrace near the Moore Park film lot. He has been a vegetarian since 1992 and reportedly transitioned to a vegan lifestyle in 2009.

This commitment has led him to become an advocate for animal rights.

The film’s publicist was not available for comment yesterday.
