Speilberg is set for Golden Globe with Lincoln

After garnering seven nominations for Lincoln, Steven Spielberg emerges as the leading contender for next year’s Golden Globes Awards.

In the acting categories, Daniel Day Lewis and Sally Field are up for accolades for their roles as President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Meanwhile, Spielberg is in the running for Best Director, and the movie itself contends for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

The closest competitors to Lincoln include Ben Affleck’s political thriller Argo and Quentin Tarantino’s western Django Unchained, both vying for five awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama alongside Lincoln.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, responsible for the annual Golden Globes Awards, sets itself apart from the Oscars by acknowledging drama films distinctively from more comedic entries. In the Best Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy category, Les Misérables will compete against classic favorites like Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the acclaimed adaptation of the novel Silver Linings Playbook.

As anticipated, Anne Hathaway secures a nomination for Best Supporting Actress thanks to her standout performance in Les Misérables. Other actors vying for awards include Leonardo DiCaprio for Django Unchained, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook, and Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy. In addition to Daniel Day Lewis, several other British actors are recognized for their performances, such as Helen Mirren for Hitchcock, Maggie Smith for Quartet, and Judi Dench for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

It was revealed last month that Jodie Foster will receive the Cecil B De Mille award for lifetime achievement. The upcoming Golden Globes will take place in LA on January 13, 2013, hosted by nominees Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in the TV comedy actress category.
