Recently, he has been attempting to restore his image, with a heartfelt appeal from his friend Robert Downey Jr. urging Hollywood to ‘forgive him his trespasses.’
It would be reasonable to expect that Mel Gibson would avoid reminding the public of past embarrassing moments that have damaged his reputation.
However, the actor stirred controversy by bringing a new love interest to the location of his infamous DUI arrest in 2006.
Last night, Mel was seen leaving Moodshadows restaurant in Malibu alongside the unidentified blonde woman. He exited first through the back door, with his companion following shortly after. Dressed casually in a black leather jacket and leggings, Mel’s date was tall and slender.
The couple was then seen leaving in Mel’s Smart Car, which was waiting for them.
Sporting clumsy brown leather sandals, Mel, 55, had some trouble as he accidentally stepped on his own foot while trying to get into the vehicle.
Moodshadows is notable as the site where Mel was arrested for a DUI in 2006. His police report revealed that Gibson made antisemitic remarks towards the arresting officer, stating: ‘Fucking Jews… the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.’
He has since expressed remorse for his ‘despicable’ conduct, explaining that those comments were made ‘in a moment of insanity.’
At this month’s American Cinemateque Awards, Robert Downey Jr. appealed to Hollywood to forgive Mel for his past mistakes, stating: ‘I urge you to forgive my friend his trespasses.’
Regrettably, the Braveheart star faced another setback to his image that very same week.
Just days prior, Gibson was involved in a car accident while traveling to Arizona, leaving his 23-month-old daughter Lucia – who was under his care – in Malibu with a nanny.
He shares custody of Lucia with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, from whom he separated last year.
A source close to Oksana revealed, “During a four-day custody visit, Mel decided to go to Arizona. We’ve heard that Lucia was left at Mel’s Malibu home under the supervision of a nanny when the crash occurred. Oksana panicked upon reading about the incident online, fearing Lucia was in the car with Mel at the time. Mel hadn’t notified Oksana of his travel plans and didn’t provide regular updates regarding Lucia’s wellbeing.”
Mel and Oksana have received an extension to finalize their ongoing custody arrangement.
