After the terms of her probation were revoked by a US judge, Lindsay Lohan was taken into custody while in handcuffs.
Following a hearing, the actress was escorted away when it was revealed she had been removed from a community service assignment at a women’s shelter.
This marks yet another legal issue for the 25-year-old actress, who received probation for a 2007 drink-driving incident and a theft charge this year.
Bail was established at $100,000, which was promptly posted.
“The violations have been continuous,” stated superior court judge Stephanie Sautner to Lindsay Lohan.
A city prosecutor proposed jail time, but the judge scheduled a hearing for 2 November to determine if additional time in prison is warranted.
Although she has faced four brief jail sentences in the past, she has been released early each time due to overcrowding in jails.
“Lohan is someone who is on probation,” remarked her attorney, Shawn Holley. “Not everyone on probation behaves perfectly at all times.”
Known for her roles in Mean Girls and the TV show Ugly Betty, the actress was supposed to complete 360 hours of service at the Downtown Women’s Centre in April, an organization that supports homeless women.
The judge noted that nine of Lohan’s appointments at the centre were “blown off,” and she “attended once but left after an hour.”
Criticism arose as the actress neglected to attend her four-hour appointments at the women’s centre and took six months to finish a court-mandated Shoplifters Anonymous course.
While she has embarked on working with the American Red Cross, judge Stephanie Sautner mentioned that this effort would not count since it was not part of her official sentence.
The judge also questioned how Lohan could manage her required weekly psychological counselling while traveling in Europe between 9 September and 5 October.
Another mugshot of Lindsay Lohan was captured following the revocation of her probation. “I am unsure how she managed that in person every week,” commented Sautner, who proposed that Lohan complete at least 16 hours of community service at the county morgue ahead of her November hearing.
Previously, the star had violated her probation in relation to a 2007 drink-driving case, resulting in a sentence of jail and rehab.
After being released early, she was admitted to the Betty Ford Centre, where she had an altercation with a recovery staff member, leading to a lawsuit against her for damages.
Just weeks post-release from the Betty Ford Centre, Lohan faced allegations of stealing a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry store located near her Los Angeles residence.
This incident was interpreted as another probation violation, prompting Lohan to be ordered to participate in psychological counselling and complete 480 hours of community service, including 120 hours specifically at the morgue.
Eventually, Lohan entered a no-contest plea to a theft charge and served 35 days of a four-month house arrest sentence.
