Is Ridley revisiting old films to protect legacy?

Ridley Scott has refuted claims that he aims to safeguard a legacy by revisiting his iconic sci-fi films Alien and Blade Runner.

The director has produced a sort of prequel to the former with Prometheus and is set to commence work on a sequel for the latter. However, he emphasizes that his return to these worlds is purely motivated by creative impulses.

Scott remarked, “Honestly, I don’t really care. What constitutes a good film? That’s the perspective I come from. I’m a storyteller.

“My role is to captivate you as much and as frequently as possible. I cherish the process and continue to genuinely enjoy it. I don’t form attachments to anything. Like a skilled antique dealer, I’m willing to part with my most treasured possessions.”

He also suggested that he has grown disillusioned with much of contemporary genre filmmaking: “In science fiction, you have the freedom to create anything you desire with digital tools, and it’s your responsibility to avoid creating anything foolish, silly, or implausible. Within that universe, it’s crucial to adhere to your own set of rules. The problem lies in not establishing enough guidelines from the outset.”

Regarding films that attempt to mimic the aesthetic of Blade Runner, Scott noted: “It’s always entertaining. Yet, you can easily spot those trying to disguise it. Nowadays, there’s no effort to conceal it at all.”
