DVD Derek reviews dinner party games?

Recently, during a dinner party with friends, I found myself asked about the best film I had ever seen.

This brought to mind the comedy featuring Simon Pegg, in which he posed the question to party guests about what he thought was the greatest film of all time before sharing his own opinion. You might recall the movie ‘How To Lose Friends And Alienate People’. His pick was Con Air… and remember, it was meant to be humorous.

Well, at the dinner party, things had to change.

It’s really quite impossible to compare timeless classics like ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ with ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’, or ‘It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World’ with ‘Gunga Din’.

The inquiry wasn’t about ‘what is the best film ever made,’ but rather, ‘What is your favorite film?’

Naturally, this question is tough to answer, and it’s a dilemma I face every time it comes up.

Each person had a unique opinion, with favorites varying widely.

Before long, the conversation shifted to favorite actors and actresses.

This evolved into a debate surrounding who might be considered the best Australian actress.

Without a doubt, the lovely Cate Blanchett garnered cheers, along with Nicole Kidman and Toni Collette. However, one guest (who I presumed was Simon Pegg in disguise) asked if we had seen the ING advertisement on television… what a real philistine that was.

He mentioned having seen her last three films and confidently stated she would be the next big star for Australia. He was referring to Isla Fisher.

I must admit, having watched her latest three films, I completely agreed—Isla is indeed a star.

Isla demonstrates that comedies are often more challenging to portray, yet they can be incredibly enjoyable. Thus, Isla Fisher was added to the list of Australia’s finest actresses by the guests at the dinner party.

Many other names came up, but we had to limit the list to fewer than twenty. At your next gathering or BBQ, give this game a try and see how many you can come up with. It’s not as easy as it seems—be ready to have some lively debates!

Have fun and enjoy!
