For years, wedding playlists have been ruled by Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.
However, times have changed — a recent study indicates that The Black Eyed Peas’ hit I Gotta Feeling has now become our top wedding song.
According to the research, Australians are moving away from cheesy music and power ballads — preferring contemporary hits instead.
Following closely is the provocative Kings of Leon song Sex on Fire, which was a chart-topper in 2009, ranking as the second most played track at weddings.
Unexpectedly, The Killers’ Mr Brightside, a tune that explores themes of infidelity and relationship anxiety, is next in line.
Completing the top five are Stevie Wonder’s funky 1972 hit Superstition and Abba’s beloved 1976 song Dancing Queen.
An analysis of 78,000 wedding playlists conducted by the digital music platform Spotify revealed that many beloved classics — including those by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones — have been set aside for hip hop and rock anthems.
Celebrity DJ Sam Young notes that newlyweds are aiming for a more vibrant party atmosphere at their receptions.
Sam, 32, commented: “Since Kate and William’s wedding last year, there has been a resurgence of coolness in weddings.
“The media buzz surrounding their wedding party antics — with claims that party-enthusiast Harry curated their reception playlist — has made couples eager to recreate that excitement.
“While it may seem surprising that tracks about partying and sex are dominating wedding playlists, my experiences suggest that couples prioritize creating an unforgettable party for their guests over traditional slow dances.”
