Angry Birds – the movie

The announcement has been made by Rovio Entertainment that Angry Birds will be adapted into a movie.

The 3D computer-animated feature film is set to be released in cinemas during the summer of 2016. To maintain creative control, Rovio will be financing the film independently, outside the Hollywood studio system.

Rovio confirmed in a press release two significant members of the movie’s creative team. The film will be produced by John Cohen, known for his work on Despicable Me, and David Maisel, the former Chairman of Marvel Studios, will serve as the executive producer.

In the press release, Cohen stated: “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is creating excellent new ways for Angry Birds fans to engage with these characters. Personally, I have spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the past few years, which I can now justifiably call research for the movie.”

Since the launch of Angry Birds in 2009, the game has achieved over a billion downloads.
