Things would have been quite different in proposing marriage hundreds of years ago.
According to the relaunched online version of the Oxford English Dictionary, we’re told that had Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton 300 years ago he might have asked to “join giblets” with her, or even suggested that they “buckle”.
Not really on a par with one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, I grant you, but still a whole heap more romantic than the “whatever love means” quote that Prince Charles used 30 years ago when describing his engagement to Diana.
